Mīyō Pimātisiwinkamik Youth Center

Box Elder, MT

Project Description

IN PROGRESS - The Rocky Boy Health Center, located on the Rocky Boy's Reservation of the Chippewa Cree Tribe in North-Central Montana, wanted to expand their health services to include facilities specifically for youth on the reservation. The project was named the Mīyō Pimātisiwinkamik Youth Center, or “Mīyō" for short. Mīyō translates loosely as “Good” (in a broad sense), Pimātisiwin as “life” and kamik as “lodge” in the Cree language. The design team worked closely with RBHC to create a facility that could help encapsulate their goals. The facility includes a small clinic for limited health care services, classrooms for educational and cultural teachings, a cafeteria and kitchen, a gym and fitness center, a garden area for edible and medicinal plantings, an outdoor gathering space, and space for outdoor teachings such as tipi and sweat lodge construction. The building is a mix of steel frame and precast concrete with different patterns and colors relating to the medicine wheel and seasons of the year.
